warmly

Specially now (while seeing everybody at sea course), when questioned about what I miss the most, the answer is simple and comes easily: the beach.

Summer culture, carioca life style... hot season, taking a dip, sun on skin, friends to have a draft (actually, many...), to enjoy music and the city - with swing. Carnival, I love you!

Finally, the family to heat my heart.

Saudades, Brasil!

for girls

Not in a pejorative way, as usually people may express some critique against some female singers' style. Nonetheless, that's how I can classify 'There Will Be Stars', Elisapie Isaac's first solo album. She's some kind of Céu from Quebec (Yes, I think I can say that...).

Sweet voice, excellent cadence, smart lyrics... The fact is that I don't get tired of listening her! Perfect to chill out... *(Precious attention for Navvaatara, my favorite toune - of Café de Flore soundtrack. However, I can assure you that the entire record is good. Actually, perfect! Du bonbon!)

"New"/different talents are always a delightful discovery! Now, I will hear her new disc, Travelling Love, released last year. I'm trustful I will like it. So you will...

Well, I hope all you guys (ooops: specially you, GIRLS!) enjoy her music.

happy 66!

It's Bowie's birthday, but the gift is ours:

Releasing the single ‘Where Are We Now?’ besides announce his new album ‘The Next Day' - the first in a decade(!).

What an excellent surprise in this current internet time, social networking fever! None whispers about that... Amazing.

In the real analogical life, a treat for old school fans, who still buy vinyls and books of/about him - as us! (recent buyers, including).

rien de rien

Non ! Rien de rien
Non ! Je ne regrette rien
Ni le bien qu'on m'a fait
Ni le mal tout ça m'est bien égal !

Non ! Rien de rien
Non ! Je ne regrette rien
C'est payé, balayé, oublié
Je me fous du passé !

Avec mes souvenirs
J'ai allumé le feu
Mes chagrins, mes plaisirs
Je n'ai plus besoin d'eux !

Balayées les amours
Et tous leurs trémolos
Balayés pour toujours
Je repars à zéro

Non ! Rien de rien
Non ! Je ne regrette rien
Ni le bien, qu'on m'a fait
Ni le mal, tout ça m'est bien égal !

Non ! Rien de rien
Non !

Excuse me, but I have to confess that each time I heard somebody glorofies Sergio Mendes by his Jorge Ben(Jor)’s hits, I became a little upset. It hurts me the fact that abroad EVERYBODY knows him, while the other, the true musical composition and playing of “Mas que nada”, is completelly forgotten and ignored outside Brazil. Unfortunately...

Damn it! Jorge Ben is a classic, a knighthood. Besides this song, there are many others wich can enshrine him. A simple exemple, in 2008, Rolling Stone Magazine in Brazil built a list of their 100 most important Artists of Music, take a look here to see who is top 5. I’m not jocking: Jorge Ben(Jor) is there.

Actually I do NOT have anything against Sergio Mendes. On the contrary, I’m very glad about his partnership with Black Eyed Peas (that I could check live and totally free on Ipanema sandy at reveillon 2007). He is a good artist and they did a nice job together, which has promoted a lot our music... It's awesome! I just hate to feel people leave behind another (black) marvel artist of Brazilian Music, and, sincerely, I don’t understand why (and how) this (could) happend!

There is no party in Brazil where at least one song of Jorge Bem(Jor) plays and EVERYBODY dance. It’s great. I have already been in a place where with only one CD of him, we dance all night long (poor Jorge Ben, who became rough at that moment!). Furthermore, he is kind... In 2001, when I worked at Planeta Atlântida, I knew him personally and he was so gentle (my mother won a photo of us, inclusively!).

I think he is blessed by Saint George (and His dragon), as in Brazil we are used to do this link... "Salve Jorge"! By the way, today is a special occasion for this post: Jorge Ben(Jor) is turning 70 years old. To celebrate? I'll listen his music, of course...  Here, some of my playlist (all old and original versions, which I prefer):

Ponta de lança africano (Umbabarauma);
Zumbi;
Balança Pema;
Menina mulher da pele preta;
O telefone;
Minha teisomia, uma arma pra te conquistar;
Que pena
Ela é minha menina;
Os Alquimistas estão chegando;
Santa Clara clareaou;
Por causa de você, menina;
Bebete Vambora;
Cadê Teresa, among other tunes...

This is my tribute (my particular way to do people get to know him and more about our music... after all, who doesn't know Jorge Ben, doesn't know Brasilian music at all!). Read the complete Rolling Stone article about this 70-years old artist online.

putting all troubles away

Who sings do that!

By the way, without a doubt, what United States have produced the best is soul music. North American black people changed the world with their rhythm in 50’s. They inclusively created the Rock n’ Roll. Furthermore, both Blues and Jazz Music… Anything else?  No, only this is enough.

This weekend happened in Arpoador, here in Rio, part of the 9° Bourbon Street Fest 2011. On Sunday and yesterday some excellent artists from New Orleans (the black south city which was ravaged by hurricane Katrina in 2008) presented their shows outside.

I was marvellously surprised when I arrived there on Sunday, after beach and saw a nice audience seated cleanly and neatly, well-behaved, civilized, waiting for the beggining of the shows (which started in late). Seemed like some festivals in European parks. Of course some other individuals (who came late) complained about that, asking them to stand up (because in this way, more people could be in smaller space in front of the stage).

Some minutes later, unavoidably, in view of the circumstances, they attended them, but in order to dance. After all, the music is contagious! Everybody was dancing... It was crowded - the proof that Brazilian people appreciate this kind of international event. It was an excellent initiative to bring more culture and good music… for free.

Unlosable.

... and it is still happening! More information here.

in the name of (self-)love

There is nothing worst for a woman than someone asking her if she is pregnant, when indeed she isn‘t. In other words, that means she is fat.

Then, if she has already thought about, this fact represents the deadline to start working out immediately. There are no excuses to evade it anymore.

Actually, even a slight effort to recover health damages is valid. Fortunately, positive physical shifts have happened since visiting often the gym.

Two months later, it is great to hear eulogies when wearing the same clothes which brought in the past doubts about the shape of the body. I confess it is too satisfying, once my ego was massaged. After all, women are silly; they puffed up.

Becoming slimmer increases any self-esteem, letting it swelled as a peacock. That improves inclusively the sex performing. It is not only a behaviour change, but a choise that means so much for life...

Thus, make itself thin is also good for loving.

mockery
(or should I say “cowardice”?)

Weighing against it (literately), there are many kind of sweet temptations. I reckon nobody has pointed them better than Marisa Monte through her song “Não é Proibido” (lyric of her, Dadi and Seu Jorge).

Jujuba, bananada, pipoca,
Cocada, queijadinha, sorvete,
Chiclete, sundae de chocolate,

Uh!

Paçoca, mariola, quindim,
Frumelo, doce de abóbora com coco,
Bala juquinha, algodão doce e manjar.

Ironically, it is one of my favourite ones to workout, likewise most part of those treats appetize me so much - chiefly popcorn and icecream, I confess. Actually, any dessert inspires me to loose weigh as well burn calories while exercising (for sure, thinking about them, that I will be able to eat one day again with no blame).

on the shelf

Today, which is a special occasion: Saint Expeditious Day, responsible for all urgent causes, I will broach a delicate issue for women: the deadline age for finding the love of their lives.

I watched recently the play “Maria do Caritó” and I tried to figure out which are the reasons that set us aside, forgotten over a long period of time. Lilia Cabral plays the part of Maria, a 50-year-old single (and religious) woman.

She, as most part of lonely ladies, is looking for(ward) a true love. So, she prays hard to get it as soon as possible, asking saints for it, besides turning to magic and blackmailing Saint Anthony in order to reach her wish and leave the “caritó”.

It is something similar to the shelf… There, we put things that are not being often used. Unfortunately (and also probably) it will be there for quite some time - and as it goes by, the chances to get her place outside, in the sun, decreases. Further: out of sight, out of mind.

Hence, without plenty of time, I will ask Expeditious a little (effective and quick) help. Since I’m almost 30, I should not waste many opportunities anymore. So, good luck is awaited to helping me from now not to be alone forever.

About the play... It is wonderful. Scenography, costumes, both acting and directing... Notability for Dani Barros as a chicken. Actually, everything seems perfect. It is all the best! That is my theatral tip of present time:

Maria do Caritó

breaking the global ice

It is not rare wonder ourselves about some actor or actress who we have never seen anymore… Though Record and SBT are giving for these professionals more opportunities to working outside Globo’s jobs, sometimes a few simply disappear!

Maybe they are in the ‘refrigerator’, both preserved and hidden - as it is usually said here… In a “rest” period far from stages, flashes and lights.

Fortunately, good artists succeed and nowadays can be watched in important roles on television. Cases as Graziella Moretto, Marcelo Tas, Luis Miranda and Roberta Rodrigues call my attention at these last days.

(As a consequence of a sleeplessness) I saw them recently on Telecurso 2000 episodes. I was surprised, further due to Tas. I have never seen him in Globo programming. However, I’m glad because he is on the top now - after all Telecurso 2000 sucks… (not its content, as well as its purposes for sure - nevertheless... it does!) for their category.

past inquiry

Apparently, it is (finally) going to be known the reason why the Chilean president Salvador Allende was killed. Almost 40 years after a(nother) bloody 11th September, in 1973, his body will be exhumed next month to discover what caused his death. At the time, he was overthrown and a couple hours later he died.

Then, the general Augusto Pinochet governed Chile during the next 15 years, when occurred one of the most heavy dictatorship in Latin America in those days. As has occured here and also in Argentina, many socialist militants vanished at that time and until now (the bodies) have not been found.

Two versions of Allende's incident has given since then: the first ("official") saying that he committed suicide, and another one in which he was murdered by militaries when the palace in Santiago was invaded. After some examination, will be probe over death. All the truth about it is going to come to the surface. Isabel Allende, his daughter, current senator of Chile and also a renowned writer, believes that it is the only chance to discover at last this mystery.

In my sincere opinion, it wont be a surprise this riddle's result. Let's wait to confirm it... and finally turn over this (mournful) page of the History.

persisting in an error of stiffness
(an typical military behaviour)

Members of military reserves are trying to forbid the exhibition of ‘Amor e Revolução’ soap opera written by Tiago Santiago, showed on SBT channel. They are claiming about the possibility of population being induced against the Armed Forces as a result of the content presented.

The plot runs around Brazilian dictatorship (from 1964 to 1985) while reproduces the politic oppression and also the chase of socialist militants. This is the main reason they fear… that everybody knows the truth - all cruelty they did in those (dark) days below stairs of that heavy regime.

A petition is running on internet to take it off the air and, until now, has taken around four hundred signatures. The reservists' speech suggests that the soap opera is a consequence of a deal of the owner of the broadcasting station with the current Brazilian Government as a way to quit a little of the huge debt they have.

Dilma Rousseff, our present president, was one of these young armed rebels who got weapons in their hands order to trying to subvert the system. She also suffered all violence of tortures applied against arrested communists. Thus, this fact has given rise to her worry about these issues (probably more than her antecessors did).

She is in favour of the creation of the “Truth Commission”, some kind of committee to take care about the politics matters, among other things. In my left point of view, it is a magnificent opportunity to rub people’s nose in the reality, even it  hits on army where it hurts… By the way, this is exactly the main aim: touching a sore spot. As the (Hi)story has it, we got it! Further, another public petition deffending 'Amor e Revolução' was created online - join

The tide turned… Censure (and also torture) never more!

protest music

To conclude, I’ll finish this post talking about the importance of the means by which the people expresses itself in an attempt to subvert, changing the situation: music.

At 60’s it was extremely important not only to rebel but also to stimulate people to keep fighting, going ahead, not giving up the cause. Songs such as “Para não dizer que eu não falei das flores” (commonly called “Caminhando”) has been some kind of motto for some youth generations. Artists as Chico Buarque then wrote many lyrics which objected that dark situation. Beautiful examples are “Roda Viva”, “Apesar de você” and “Cálice”.

I enjoy a lot this last one in particular. I reckon that its wordplay is so smart, its message so deep and intense, that always let me touched, as reminding me something I would live in the past. I should say that I recognize this Chico’s skill as an essential gun considering the fact that many people was not able to rebelling themselves and join to fighting armed… However it may be, at least they were subliminally advised through his chords and verses.

Things has changed since the dictatorship finished. Nowadays the quite known MPB doesn’t work anymore as an opposition tool. While they talk about love, who contradicts the reality now is funk or rap music. Though, it is a subject for another post… at an opportune time. Await! For the moment, I’m just praising the soundtrack of ‘Amor e Revolução’ - that plays not only the classics, but also new versions of the hits of that time.

Banda Vega’s “Nossa Canção” (a 1966 Luiz Airão’s song, but known through Roberto Carlos’ voice), besides Pitty’s Pitty’s “Cálice” (written by Chico in partnership with Gilberto Gil), among others equally good... This album for sure will be very successful! Be it so.

transcending ideas

Words simply flows in his mind. He has sang both beautiful and smart verses as far back as I can remember. A perfect combination between writing and sound, structure and spelling, meaning and significance... That is the Arnaldo Antunes's music.

He have touched me so deep, always saying something about my present or past moments - home, life, love, desire, all feelings… His works seems me intensely complete, although I haven't read everything written by him. It's not necessary, though. I'm already convinced about.

I admit I didn't know this his last job live recorded in his own house last year to its full extent before going to see him in Circo Voador yesterday night. In fact, incredibly: I hadn't seen a entire concert of him yet, until now (in that unforgettable occasion).

Despite many (crazy) people don’t like him, I love his odd style. I don't quit to struggle for saying: it’s doesn’t do any good… for me, “consumado”! [Room and board - laundry too... After all, as its job's names already says: A casa é sua!]

My kingdom for knowing in what are he thinking about right now...even whitout saying anything using his unmistakable voice - my favorite one, inclusively!

heavyweight choose(s)

A música venceu” - It‘s true!

With this samba-enredo, João Carlos Martins’ life was sang by Vai Vai Samba School and they won the São Paulo’s parade carnival this year. One of the most noted contemporary musicians of erudite, he was honoured by a big fancy show at this carnival time.

This pianoman and maestro, well-known by his acclaimed (Johann Sebastian) Bach performances, had his life presented on the avenue cadenced by Bateria’s beats played by hundreds of rhythmers on Friday, 04th. For those who don’t know, This man is a live example of overcoming.

He have had great difficulties during his career. Firstly, since he had lost his right-hand movements due to an accident during a soccer match, he became a maestro. Just as he had rehabilitated his capacity to play again, he developed a illness that made him give up of music.

However, his passion was stronger and he passed to play only with the left hand, creating an unique style. After a concert in Sofia, Bulgaria, he was robbed and took a licking, losing the movements again. So, after a dream, he decided to learn to conduct and, finally, became a maestro. Nowadays, he is world-widely recognized.

Interesting, because life’s journey can be as a symphony with its acts: allegro, andante, adagio and largo. Life has its ups and downs. It is important keep going on, though.

once a king, always a king

Another triumph of music was the Beija-Flor's parade, in Rio de Janeiro, on Monday 7th (better: on the early morning of Tuesday).  Presenting Roberto Carlos's life, they won this year the dispute.

As João Carlos, Roberto is another example of overcoming. Many people don't know, but he lost one of his legs when he was a child. It was an accident, a locomotive runned over him. Nevertheless, he continued his life quite fine and reached the peak of acclaim and has been decorated as a ’king’ (of MPB, and also youth in 60’s, and since 2010, of Latin Music).

His groupies (at any age - from childhood through the old age - nevertheless, the majority aren't little girls anymore...) are always shouting, frenetic. His fan legion was awaiting anxiously for that moment of glory. Now, they are satisfied - many have held fast with them the red rose given (a tacky cliché that still works with this audience).

This year, Vai Vai and Beija Flor were succeded while choosing two men of renown (and also blessed) -as the noble motif (or theme) for their carnival parade. Both São Paulo e Rio have homaged our music, which won anyway, indeed!

Bravo.

forrobodó

Avoiding my twisted roots.

I’m impressed with the quantity of Brazilians in Amsterdam. Actually, sometimes some of them simply don’t seem as us (or ‘Am I an E.T.?’). I know that our country is too huge and our culture is so vast… So, is understandable that I am not like most of them (or they aren‘t like me). However, it doesn’t mean that I'm proud or agree with their behaviour.

Their limited music preferences (sertanejo, forró and pagode - the popular ones, not the classic and 'old school'), alongside the wrong way to talk (I’m sure that I can speak English better than they the correct Portuguese!) leave me upset! Not only that, but some (dispensable) little lies and excuses, as the mania to be in vantage of others, besides the excessive sexuality etc, defame and also defile our reputation abroad.

I would like to be now in touch with another people, practicing my English or trying to speak Dutch or other language, learning (about) another culture, getting its new background… I need this break and not to be living this lack (a typical “samba do crioulo doido”) .

I wish for novelty (and respect!).

california of mine

I think one of the best anniversary gifts I received (actually the most expressive, which I will never forget!) not only this year, but in my whole life, was my father's one. Asked for, he gave me his 'top ten list' of Rio Grande do Sul's Music (called there “Gaudéria” aswell), including latin songs from our hermanos.

This is our reality - for who doesn’t know us and also our culture: we are joined to them over and above borders. Unfortunately we only can’t speak the same language - in fact not EXACTLY… since, there, we are used to speak a kind of castellano, or a “portunhol” due to the proximity to them.

As a consequence to have been given to me, it is my list now! I was deeply touched when I read his email sent to me, not only owing to my birthday, whereas it is something related with my roots too. Obviously, I've approved it - as much, then I am obligated to post here! Thus, let’s see:

1 - Cordas de Espinho, from Luiz Coronel (who were my father’s college professor). Became famous the version recorded by Fafá de Belém;

2 - Guri, from Cesar Passarinho;

3 - Canto Alegretense, from Antonio Augusto Fagundes (Nico Fagundes) and Bagre Fagundes;

4 - Pedi ao Vento, from Os Monarcas (actual);

5 - Orelhano, from Eleu da Slva (doctor from Rosário do Sul), recorded by the argentine singer Dante Ramon Ledesma;

6 - Romance na Tafona, from Luiz Carlos Borges;

7 - Los Hermanos, argentine, recorded by Mercedes Sosa. However, the best version is Elis Regina’s one;

8 - El Condor Pasa, icon of Chilen’s music and latin american folklore;

9 - Céu, Sol, Sul, from Leonardo;

10 - Sabe Moço, from Leopoldo Rassier, of “Não Podemo se Entregá Pros Home” (a protest song).

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, this is my musical theme of my cultural roots and traditions. What is yours?

keep loving amy

I swear I would enjoy to go in one of her awaited concerts here in Brazil in the next days (or wherever! - Amy’s presentation is always worthwhile. However, here are some objections:

- I’ve not taken a VIP ticket or invitation;
- R$ 200 is too expensive. For me, in my present financial status, it is more that I can pay for;
- the place chosen by production  (HSBC Arena) is very far from home. It is necessary a transfer service... “Perrengue”(!);
- no one of my closer friends is going to (for me it is essential be in good company in this kind of event…)

Ok, I know that the life’s opportunities are over there and we should not waste it. Nevertheless, I’ll only another time…

Anyway… I’m (still) loving her - junkie or not (I’m not just paying for a risk - thus, I prefer her CDs, high fidelity recordings)!

somewhere

He is over there… walking, in metro, listening music, on the beach, watching concerts, drinking something, attending some course, driving, parking his car, stopped due to the traffic red light, taking for a walk his dog, telling a short story for his child, seating on the park, at club, shopping at the supermarket, choosing a DVD for tonight, cooking, working, studying, reading a book, taking a pícture, painting, riding a bike, learning another idiom; writing a poesy, an essay, a book, a thesis, a letter or lyrics; going to a stadium; playing an instrument, cards, tennis or soccer; surfing, jogging, planting flowers on the garden, travelling, giving a party; dinning, having lunch or a breakfast; supporting his team while is watching its game on television in a pub;  gazing at the sunset or sunrise; diving into the sea, sailing, flying, fishing, trekking, dancing, singing during the shower, connecting, being online, writing my blog, waiting for me… or mounting a horse - after all, what else could princes do?

Is it possible cross me on the street, looking at me (astounded), while I simply don’t see him? I must pay (more) attention... Also taking care with my appearance - even going to the bakery! It happens (of meeting someone special) when we least expect it! - maybe not, but PROBABLY, in these days your look is terrible, seems very tired and (all the worse:) you are dressed badly. [Oh, shit!]
